AB The study examines the release and reception of foreign films on the Czechoslovak market during the early sound cinema era, with an emphasis on the so-called "German versions" of mostly American films, and uses the example of German and American productions to show their relative popularity with respect to their cultural attributes. The German versions, shown in Prague cinemas between 1929 and 1934, were seen as a threat to the dominance of the Czech language in the public sphere and in future Czechoslovak cinema.
