As a humanist, Chaplin was perceived as a potentially subversive figure in the inhuman environment of Hollywood, and was therefore valued as a progressive individualist by the communist regime. His 1947 film Mensieur Verdoux was very positively reviewed in the Czechoslovak press of the time.
