RT Journal Article SR Electronic A1 Černík, Jan T1 Screenwriting and The Main Administration of Press Supervision in Czechoslovakia, 1953-1962 JF Iluminace YR 2017 VO 29 IS 1 SP 29 OP 49 DO 10.58193/ilu.1501 UL https://iluminace.cz/en/artkey/ilu-201701-0002.php AB The topic of the study is censorship in screenwriting in Czechoslovakia during 1950s. In this period production process in nationalized film industry was stabilized and The Main Administration of Press Supervision was established as the main censorship institution with tendencies to centralize censorship over mass media. In literature up to now the relation between censorship and 1950s screenwriting is mentioned as one-way administrative interventions. This approach is focused solely on the difficulties in the process of approval and cannot reveal the censorship as a system. The already complicated process of screenplay development acquired one more layer of control. In this study, I employ a method that describes censorship as a communication between filmmakers and censors. After the institution was stabilized censors started to optimize the approval process and changed the system of control several times. The presented study describes the approval process and how it changed.
