Illusionary Perception and Cinema. Experimental Thoughts on Film Theory and Neuroscience

Patricia Pisters

Iluminace 2011, 23(4):43-58

In her study, the author deals with the effect of film on the viewer, especially how the meanings of a cinematic work enter one's consciousness. She uses definition and attention to revise M´nsterberg's analysis of film detail as an embodiment of attention. As concrete examples, she analyses the films The Illusionist and The Prestige. In line with M´nsterberg, the author considers film - both its formal devices and the behaviour of individual characters - as a mirror of the viewer's own mental processes. Unlike M´nstenberg, however, she describes these operations with the tools of contemporary science, not psychology.

"The Pit of Naturalism". Neuroscience and the Naturalized Aesthetics of Film

Murray Smith

Iluminace 2011, 23(4):59-79

The English-language study focuses on the direct impact of film on the viewer, e.g. shock and immediate empathy. The author identifies a possible intersection of neuroscientific research and film theory in such affective reactions of the audience, which are triggered automatically and immediately.

On Icarus' Wings. The Cinematic Experience of Falling Bodies

Adriano D'Aloia

Iluminace 2011, 23(4):81-97

The English-language study addresses the apparent paradox created by the viewer's experience of the cinematic representation of a body in free fall: although the final impact is almost never shown on screen, the viewer emotionally experiences the fall as if it had been completed. According to the author, the viewer's reaction can be understood against the background of psychological and neuroscientific research on the perception of goal-directed action.
