The star system in Weimar Cinematography

Joseph Garncarz

Iluminace 2012, 24(1):31-43

The study points to the existence of the German star system, whose stars, although not very resonant internationally, were an important element in the national cultural and social life. The author takes issue with the unconceptual use of American terminology and points out the inappropriateness of some terms for the European environment, as European star systems grow out of different cultural specificities and traditions.

©árka Gmiterková

Iluminace 2012, 24(1):45-68

The author points out the necessity of selecting appropriate terms (star image, star personality, star vehicle) and of interdisciplinary research that will link the theatre and film spheres within the theory of stars.

No Place for Peace-Mongers. Charlie Chaplin, Monsieur Verdoux (1947), and Czechoslovak Communist Propaganda

Jindřiąka Bláhová

Iluminace 2012, 24(1):69-86

This thematic study shows how Charlie Chaplin's iconic personality and work carried certain characteristics that were used by the system in post-war Czechoslovakia for ideological propaganda. As a humanist, Chaplin was perceived as a potentially subversive figure in the inhuman environment of Hollywood, and was therefore valued as a progressive individualist by the communist regime. His 1947 film Mensieur Verdoux was very positively reviewed in the Czechoslovak press of the time.

Olga Schoberová, a Film Star in the Context of Czechoslovak Cinema of the 1960s

Vladimíra Chytilová

Iluminace 2012, 24(1):87-112

The study deals with the star image of the actress Olga Schoberová in the specific conditions of socialist Czechoslovakia between 1963 and 1970. Schoberová represented a unique type of star combining typical features of Western film stardom with specific Czech features in the context of political and social changes in Czechoslovakia in the late 1960s.
