Jakub Macek

Iluminace 2017, 29(2):7-24 | DOI: 10.58193/ilu.1514

This exploratory study draws upon data from a 2014 survey of the Czech adult population, focusing on differences between traditional and convergent domestic audiences of film and TV. Employing statistical methods of hierarchical cluster analysis and multinomial logistic regression, this empirical paper considers traditional and convergent modes of content consumption, various forms of the curation of content, the viewers' attitudes to content, socio-demographic variables, and culture in general. On this basis, an evidence-based typology of Czech domestic audiences is formulated, suggesting four types of film and TV viewers: traditional passive audiences,...

Financing of Czech Feature Films from the Perspective of Filmmakers

Eliška Pinďáková

Iluminace 2017, 29(2):65-83 | DOI: 10.58193/ilu.1516

The article presents sources of financing of contemporary Czech feature films and explores how filmmakers evaluate these sources. It follows the study of film development of Czech feature films by Petr Szczepanik published in 2015 and extends it by analysis of all sources, including those that have not been previously mentioned, especially sponsorship and crowdfunding. Individual sources are evaluated according to their suitability for those filmmakers who focus on the production of art house films on the one hand and those who focus on the production of more commercially oriented ones on the other.

THE ARRIVAL FROM THE DARKNESS. Possibilities and Functions of the Flashback in the Narrative Construction

Martin Kos

Iluminace 2017, 29(2):85-97 | DOI: 10.58193/ilu.1517

This analytical study describes possibilities and functions in the use of flashbacks in Jan Stanislav Kolar's films and situates them in the context of film production in the Czech lands until 1922. It argues that during this period, the flashback was a standard procedure, but Kolár represented a very unique tendency when experimenting with its use in the Czech environment. The analysis primarily focuses on the massive flashback of the The Arrival from the Darkness as an example of a sophisticated work with the distribution of information, through building of a complex network of relationships, parallels between the characters and through breaking...
