If You Build It- Film Studios and the Transformative Effects of Migrating Media Productions

Ben Goldsmith

The author maps the current developments in the globalization of film production. The much-discussed migration of runaway productions, film projects fleeing for cheaper services, locations, labour and financial incentives, varies to a large extent according to the opportunities offered by studios anywhere in the world. The meaning of the word studio here means both a physical location, a studio hall with an adjacent outdoor lot, and a flagship in a complex network of local infrastructure, which, in addition to studios, usually (e.g. also in the case of Prague) includes attractive accessible locations, a non-unionised, cheap and flexible workforce, transparently functioning production service providers, a system of financial incentives or tax breaks, and wider facilities, including a secure legal framework and tourist attractions. The contribution of Goldmisth's article lies in the categorization of migrant project destinations.

Keywords: film production companies and studios, film industry, economics and film, sociology of film, film services, globalization and film, filming and production, exteriors, state support, taxes, financing, labour, trade unions, film workers
